I always consider myself a loner, when people asked me “Hey, the weekend is coming. What are your plans? “, I rather not tell the truth and just “sell” them an exciting story when in fact I just wanted to be left alone!! Yes, alone with my thoughts and myself!

However, there is something yet, I could not control. It was the emptiness of my mind; I was always afraid to have nothing on my mind. And if my mind was empty, the dark and scary comes along, so I would wrap a story around it.

Lately, I found out that being alone can be extremely beneficial, but only if we know how to be present.
Correct me if I am wrong but isn’t our mind always on the past or the future when we are alone. Always thinking about stories that happened or we want to happen, and we can be hours doing that, or even days. What about being present?! Turn off our thoughts and just enjoy our surroundings.
Cooking something and only pay attention to what we are doing, smelling every ingredient that we are throwing to the pan, taste as we go, enjoying the moment and every second of life. That my friend is what I call being conscient.
All these years I was an unconscious loner, thinking that was a healthy and essential process for my wellbeing. However, I could never block all the stories that my brain produced, so in fact, I was never alone. I was trapped in an imaginary world created by my mind, with the ghosts of my past and fairy-tale of my future.

It is not an easy process and I am still giving my first steps, I started to meditate. The application Headspace can be extremely helpful if you are starting as I do. Include it in your routine, find a gap in your busy day, to be ALONE, but present! Feel your mind and your body, being just one, and presence every minute, every second, every millisecond, while you are doing it. It is the opportunity to be with yourself and contemplate who you are.
Be aware of your person and your surroundings, feel every breath coming in and out of your body.

Meditation is a subject that is being studied by a lot of scientists, and a practice implemented by a big percentage of successful people in this world, and by success, I don’t mean fame and luxury, by success I mean aware and happy.
To wrap up, if you are a loner like me, please give it a try and follow these pieces of advice.
Knowing how to be alone is a practice that can take months, or years to be perfectioned, but once you master it, you will witness the best version of yourself!
